As a Specifier, Contractor or Homeowner you should consider the following GLRE pre-installation guidelines.
The considered industry standard dimensions for roof windows is: 900x600mm, sized to fit between pre-installed roof rafters at 600mm centres, or  980x980mm and 900x1200mm – the latter product is designed to infill a double-rafter space. Rooflights can also be produced in non-standard sizes – for example, the GLRE Roof Window is also stocked in a variation of sizes up and to include 3000x1000mm.
The Building Industry would typically support a standard roof window product with a combination of double trimmers for horizontal support and double rafters for the associated vertical support. Double hangers are a corner detail, and single hangers are located around the connecting rafters.
The double timber supports comprise of two rafters set at 600mm centres (either C16 or C24 between 100x50mm or 225x50mm, subject to the required drawings and structural calculations. The rafters would typically be fixed together utilising bulldog timber connectors and M12 bolts.
When installing and fixing the timber detail, the head of the bolt should be recessed into the side of the wood to which the rooflight will be fixed and secured, this ensures the bolt does not protrude into the area beneath the glazing.
Please remember that the size of the pre-prepared window aperture may not be the same size as the roof window itself. The actual sizing requirements will depend on the GLRE roof window product specified, The GLRE installation Tech team can assist you in the early stages of planning and drafting the works.
When prepping and installing the supporting timber rafters, important to factor in how the insulation sarking and the ends of the battens will be supported. Roofing underlay should always be folded back and returned prior to fixing. Out-of-plane rooflights will of course require the design and construction of an upstand.
In most cases, the pre-made rooflights are delivered ‘to the kerb’ and this is certainly the case for rooflights and roof windows. The GLRE rooflight delivery fleet are open backed (flatbed) type vehicles to facilitate removal of the rooflights via crane, mechanical access, or forklift methods.  If you have decided to entrust GLRE with the installation element of the works then we can deliver all road closure, licensing, lifting and fitting, requirements, to include all lifting plans and associated site and task specific method statements and risk assessments.
If you have opted to self-install then a detailed installation guide will be provided and even certified A-frames to assist with safe and compliant lifting of the roof light or window from the back of the delivery vehicle straight into the pre prepped aperture.
GLRE Rooflights can be manufactured to include one of two enhanced protection upgrades, E/O Ritec Low Maintenance Coating or UV Solar Control Protection.
Below, we explain the benefits of each upgrade to aid you in choosing the preferred solution for you.
E/O Ritec Low Maintenance Coating
Keeping glass rooflights clean and pristine can be a challenge, Ritec low-maintenance coating offers an innovative solution. Designed to repel dirt, grime, and environmental pollutants, this advanced technology significantly reduces the need for cleaning, ensuring long-lasting clarity with minimal upkeep.
- Self-cleaning properties – Breaks down organic contaminants, allowing rainwater to wash away dirt effortlessly.
- Water & stain resistance – Prevents build-up from hard water deposits, dust, and pollution.
- Prolonged glass lifespan – Protects against degradation, ensuring durability and long-term performance.
With Ritec-treated rooflights, you enjoy crystal-clear transparency that enhances natural daylight without the hassle of constant maintenance.
E/O Solar Control Glass
Excessive sunlight can lead to overheating, glare, and UV exposure, impacting the functionality of rooflights. Our solar control glass solutions help regulate indoor environments by reducing heat gain, enhancing energy efficiency, and ensuring a comfortable living or working space.
- Heat reduction – Limits solar radiation, preventing overheating while maintaining natural daylight.
- Glare control – Improves visual comfort by filtering excessive brightness.
- UV protection – Minimizes fading of interior furnishings by blocking harmful ultraviolet rays.
Ideal for residential, commercial, and architectural applications, solar control glass ensures that rooflights provide the perfect balance of light, comfort, and performance throughout the year.

We recommend that upstand is built the same width as the rooflight frame to allow the inner wall to be plastered right up to the edge of the upstand/rooflight. Our frames are built to allow a 5mm tolerance either side so that no frame will be visible from inside.
All our standard rooflights are pre-glazed, sealed and arrive in one unit upon delivery, this allows you to fit the rooflight easily yourself. However, for bespoke, or even large standard orders, we offer an installation service for an additional fee. For bespoke orders, we recommend using our installation team as the rooflights are silicone bonded on site.
We don’t build upstands but we can put you in contact with a contractor recommended by us in your area to build the upstand for you ready for installation.
Bespoke rooflights and glazing is our speciality, we can do most things so why not give us a challenge?
Unlike many other companies, we don’t calculate delivery on weight, quantity, or size. We offer free delivery to most of the mainland UK, apart from the following locations: Wales, Cornwall & Devon = £135, Scotland = £250.Â
We accept all major Credit/Debit cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay. If you prefer we can also accept payment via Cheque or BACS transfer.
